Heads up hipsters, the blog is on a temporary hiatus as we transition towards Eclectic Eel 2.0... or Eclectic Eel 2: Revenge of the Eel, or maybe 2 Eclectic 2 Eel. One of those. You'll know it when you see it.

Wednesday Comics: Funny Page Swan Song
Abbey Road is actually a reunion album. Most people don't know this, but The Beatles effectively split-up during the recording of the Let it Be documentary. Not content to let that be their legacy, the lads pulled it all together one last time and recorded one of the greatest albums in the history of popular music. By all reports they got along splendidly.
All of this is a round-about way of bringing up Wednesday Comics, DC Comic's attempt to transplant the "Sunday Funnies" into comic book shops every Wednesday. It seems like a natural fit. If ever there was a demographic tailor made to support the dying funny pages, it's the comic book reader, a consumer who has no problem supporting a product not for it's quality, but simply out of habit.
This is not to say that Wednesday Comics isn't a project worth supporting on quality alone. It's just that the project's genius lies in its nostalgic simplicity: well respected artists and writers working on iconic characters in a familiar, over- sized format. This is actually something that should be DC Comics bread and butter, but for whatever reason isn't.
The ironic thing about all this is that just as the funny pages are dying, someone seems to have finally remembered just how great the format can be. Wednesday Comics may end up being the last great example of the American Comics Page. Where once roamed such breathtaking art as Krazy Kat and Prince Valiant is now relegated to talking heads in a three or four panel grid. Premise, set-up, punchline, repeat.
Wednesday Comics is great, but I'm worried when I hear people talk about it being the savior of the comics section format. It all feels a little Abbey Road to me. Everyone's decided to get their shit together one last time just so we can give it a proper burial later on.

Masters Monday: Evil Lyn
Poor Evil-Lyn, her parent's really set her up for a lifetime of trouble with that first name. Or maybe it's not her proper name, but more an adjective. Though to be hones, I've never heard anyone call her anything but Evil Lyn, and it's not like using an adjective with a person's proper name is all that common either. Nobody goes around calling me Awesome Lee, even though it's probably just as accurate a description as Evil is for Lyn. Maybe that's just how they roll on Eternia.
